DENMARK

This particular post is an assignment for my Professional Writing Class for Professor Kalna at DeVry University.
I have decided to research on Denmark. Denmark seems like it is a pretty place to reside.
According to http://www.doingbusiness.org/data/exploreeconomies/denmark/ this place ranks # 5 in the top places to do business with. I wanted to research both relevant and fun topics in dealing with this country. Lets begin!

A little history:

"The name of the country means "Borderlands of the Danes" in reference to a political unit created during the sixth through ninth centuries. This period was marked by a slow progression of sovereignty among the Danes, a people who originated in Skaane (today the southern part of Sweden) but eventually were based in Jutland. By the ninth century the Danes had gained mastery of the area known today as Denmark and maintained control until the late medieval period, including parts of modern Sweden and Norway. In the late medieval period, Denmark was reduced in size to approximately the area of contemporary Denmark.Denmark is a small nation whose cultural unity is mitigated by regional traditions of rural, urban, and island communities with distinctions based on local language, food, and history. This situation has sometimes created friction between local history and national history.Denmark historically includes the former colonies Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Greenland gained home rule in 1979. In 1948, the Faroe Islands became a self-governing territory within the Danish state."

How do people greet each other? Should you bow? Nod? Shake hands?

The People of Denmark seem to do what the people of the US do.
Woman to Woman they will shake hands while maintaining direct eye contact. If they are good friends, the younger generation will exchange a kiss on the cheek.
Man to Man will have a firm handshake with direct eye contact. If they are good friends a hello or hi is good enough.
Man to Woman will shake hands. If they are well acquainted they will exchange simple hellos, if they are good friends an kiss on the cheek will be exchanged.

Are businesses generally large? Family controlled? Government controlled?

Denmark is a net exporter of food and energy. Its principal exports are machinery, instruments, and food products. The United States is Denmark's largest non-European trading partner, accounting for 5.0% of total Danish goods trade in 2010. Aircraft, computers, machinery, and instruments are the major U.S. exports to Denmark.
In 2010 Denmark wasnamed the 18th richest country.

How do you express appreciation for an invitation to lunch, dinner, or someone’s home? Should you bring a gift? Send flowers? Write a thank-you note?

Gifts do not make way to an initial meeting. When invited to a Danish home, it is proper to bring a nice bottle of wine, liquor, or good chocolates. Have nicely wrapped gifts and expect them to be opened right away."
